Visionary Gifts of Hope
Translating medical breakthroughs from the lab to the clinic takes many years and millions of dollars. Most promising discoveries are lost in the phase of translation referred to as the "valley of death." To help bridge this valley, Houston Methodist draws on the transformative power of philanthropy. Our generous benefactors share our commitment to fostering translational research and have been instrumental in expanding our portfolio of world-class research programs and infrastructure. Their philanthropic gifts include a $101 million gift from Paula and Rusty Walter, the largest in the institution’s history; a $21 million commitment creating the Jerold B. Katz Academy of Translational Research; a new cellular therapeutics program and production facility instituted with a gift from Ann Kimball and John W. Johnson; and a $15 million commitment to establish the Fondren Inflammation Collaborative.

with the Houston Methodist Hospital Foundation or call 832.982.4890.The Translational Research Initiative (TRI), a matching program, advances promising inventions through preclinical studies and into clinical trials on the path to FDA approval for clinical care. Founded by the Walters, the TRI has received continued support from a dedicated group of benefactors. In addition to supporting translational research and infrastructure, philanthropic gifts created 16 new endowed chair positions in 2019, taking our total endowed chairs to 105.
