2024 Summer Internships at Houston Methodist Were a Hit
Once again, Houston Methodist summer internships were a hit! Seven hundred fifty-four applications from 113 institutions were submitted from around the country for internships in several programs.
The programs included the Diversity Equity & Inclusion Scholars, Fields Rosenberg Surgical Fellowship, Kadoorie Cardiovascular Internship, Rising Stars Surgical Internship, Summer Internship Program for High Schoolers, Summer Undergrad Research Internship and HMH Summer Operations and Administrative Interns.
This year, the program proudly hosted more than 70 interns, featuring the most diverse group of cohorts since its inception. The goal was to diversify the participant base, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity and broadening the reach of research opportunities to a wide array of backgrounds and perspectives. This diversity enriches the program, fostering an environment of varied ideas and collaborative learning.
It is an invaluable opportunity for aspiring researchers to gain practical experience, receive mentorship, and develop both professionally and personally. The Summer Internship Program stands as a testament to our commitment to nurturing the next generation of professionals, offering them a platform to grow, learn, and achieve their full potential.

The Summer Research Internship Program is a unique transformative experience that empowers students to pursue their passion for research, develop their research skill and equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career.
Key program features include:
Diverse Internship Groups—Interns are placed in diverse groups, fostering collaboration and networking. These groups provide a supportive environment where students from diverse backgrounds can share their experiences and showcase leadership skills by guiding team research assignments.
Workshops and Sessions—The program features a range of workshops and didactic sessions, including “Entering Research,” led by Gabrielle Ferguson, LMSW, Manager, Office of Graduate Studies and Trainee Affairs and JaQue’ Vickers, MBA, Senior Trainee Affairs Coordinator. This three-part workshop guides them in developing their own identity in translational research. Additionally, the program includes professional development workshops covering essential topics that equip interns with valuable knowledge for both their professional and personal growth.
Wellness and Fitness Initiatives—Interns have access to wellness center check-ins and fitness sessions, promoting social engagement, confidence and mental health.
Feedback and Improvement—An online survey system allows interns to provide real-time feedback on sessions. This helps curate meaningful content and enhances the learning experience.
Networking Opportunities—Interns participate in exclusive tours and activities, such as the Texas A&M Engineering Medical School tour and Astros game outings. These experiences provide valuable networking opportunities and insights into various professional environments.
Recognition and Awards—The program culminates in a Breakfast Awards Ceremony, where outstanding interns are recognized for their dedication, performance and leadership. Various awards, including the Intern of the Summer, Resilience Award and Leadership Award celebrate their achievements.
Capstone Projects—Interns present their research and projects, showcasing their hard work and learning outcomes, at the annual Methodist Association for Postdoctoral and Trainee Affairs (MAPTA) Symposium.
“The Summer Internship Program stands as a testament to our commitment to nurturing the next generation of professionals, offering them a platform to grow, learn, and achieve their full potential,” said Amy Wright, MBA, EdD, Director, Educational Partnerships at Houston Methodist. “It is an invaluable opportunity for aspiring researchers to receive practical experience and mentorship and develop both professionally and personally.”
