Robotic Surgery Symposium for General Surgery Residents and Fellows

Robotic surgery, which utilizes the most technologically advanced instrumentation supplemented with artificial intelligence, represents the pinnacle of minimally invasive surgery. Although robotic surgery is quickly becoming mainstream in practice, few institutions in the United States offer formal curricula in its techniques and technologies. “We’re in a robotic revolution,” explains Rodolfo Oviedo, MD, Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery at Cornell University and Director of Robotic General Surgery at Houston Methodist. “Once trainees leave their programs and enter the workforce, they’re expected to perform at a robotic surgery level.”

To ensure that surgeons trained at Houston Methodist remain at the forefront of the field, Dr. Oviedo has developed the Robotic Surgery Symposium, a formal educational curriculum in robotic surgery. Funded by a Graduate Medical Education award from the Houston Methodist Academic Institute (HMAI), the Robotic Surgery Symposium offers lectures from experienced HMAI faculty, interaction with industry partners, and skills labs at the state-of-the-art Houston Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation and Education (MITIE). As part of the award from HMAI, Dr. Oviedo and his team are prospectively collecting data on trainee performance in ten competencies to validate the curriculum, and they have already found statistically significant improvements in those areas. They have submitted these findings as an abstract for the annual meeting of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). The Robotic Surgery Symposium places Houston Methodist among elite institutions in training the next generation of surgeons.
